Comparative & Superlative Rules

🟢 1. Short Adjectives (1 syllable)

Examples: tall, small, fast

Comparative: add -er

🟩 tall → taller

Superlative: add -est

🟩 tall → the tallest

🟢 2. Adjectives ending in -e

Comparative: add -r

🟩 nice → nicer

Superlative: add -st

🟩 nice → the nicest

🟢 3. Adjectives ending in consonant-vowel-consonant

Double the final consonant and add -er/-est

🟩 big → bigger

🟩 big → the biggest

🟢 4. Short Adjectives that use 'more' and 'most'

There are a few adjectives that we can't add 'er' or 'est':

fun more fun (not funner) the most fun (not funnest)
real more real (not realer) the most real (not realest)
right more right (not righter) the most right (not rightest)
wrong more wrong (not wronger) the most wrong (not wrongest)

🟢 5. Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y

Examples: happy, funny

Change -y to -i and add -er/-est

🟩 happy → happier

🟩 happy → the happiest

🟢 6. Adjectives with 2+ syllables (except those ending in -y)

Examples: beautiful, expensive, important

Comparative: use more + adjective

🟩 more beautiful

Superlative: use the most + adjective

Some adjectives change completely:
