There were over 7500 students in Aberystwyth University, three main faculties of Arts, Social Science and the Sciences. Aberystwyth University was founded in 1872 and was called University College Wales Aberystwyth. It became a founder member of the University of Wales in 1894 and changed its name to the University college of Wales Aberystwyth. In the mid 1990s, the University changed its name again to the University of Wales Aberystwyth. On the 1st of September 2007, Aberystwyth University became independent again.
The very first principal was Thomas Charles Edwards and there were only 26 students. In the 1880s, the university was awarded a coat of arms. The National Student Survey named Aberystwyth University fifth in the UK in 2006 and 10th in 2007 for overall student satisfaction. The university has 17 departments. It has a very good computer science department and very good geography and environmental science departments.
